There isn't a fixed number everyone agrees on, but going back to the mother deed or the earliest traceable transaction and following each transfer down to the current seller is the general idea. If there's a gap anywhere in that chain, that's where you push for an explanation.
also pull the EC through registration.ap.gov.in for the same period you're tracing, cross check it against the documents the seller hands you, discrepancies between the two are worth flagging
check Meebhoomi's adangal and 1-B too for current recorded ownership, and make sure the name there actually matches your seller before you go further with the older paperwork
