Converting agricultural land to non-agricultural near Karimnagar before building anything on it

We own a small parcel that's currently classified agricultural, want to put up a small structure on part of it eventually. Someone mentioned we need the conversion done first, otherwise registration and construction both become an issue later. Where does this process even start.

This is the NALA/NA conversion, you'd apply through the Tehsildar/RDO office for the jurisdiction the land falls under, and it now ties into the Bhu Bharati records for that survey number once approved. Get the actual conversion order/proceedings in hand, don't assume a verbal clearance is enough - without that document on file a lot of buyers later find registration or a bank loan against the land gets stuck.

We went through this two years back, the biggest delay for us was getting our own ownership papers in order before applying, not the department itself.

Watch out for anyone who tells you construction is fine informally without the order. Saw a case where the building had to be regularized later at extra hassle because the conversion was never actually completed on paper.
